We were recently approached by a large company in the Motor Industry who were looking to invest in a Learning Management System (LMS) that would provide the following business benefits to their organisation:

- Delivery of online material
- Delivery of online testing
- Pre- and post-learning of face-to-face training
- Booking of face-to-face learning events
Having sat through many sales pitches from other providers at this stage, they had become frustrated with, either the extremely high costs involved, lack of integration with internal systems or the simple fact that, once the system was live, it could not be managed exclusively by their internal IT Department without being tied into expensive maintenance costs in the future.
After an intensive one day meeting with the client to determine their requirements, we got to work developing a system that met their needs. We decided on an open source web application and Learning Management System that could be extended to include the following functionality:
1. Content
- Scorm Compliance
We arranged for the Scorm-compliant learning and test material that had been created by third party software to be uploaded and managed by the system. - Course Structure and Certification Routes
Course structure and Certification Routes were enabled so that the client could upload them after the system went live. - Compliance - Repeat Tests
Learners would be offered the opportunity to undertake a test a maximum of three times, after which the test would need to be reset by a training administrator if the passing score was not reached - Compliance - Reporting
Suitable reporting was put in place to track learner progress and compliance targets. - Compliance – Certificates
We arranged for Certificates to be managed online and to be downloaded-able and printable by learners once programmes are complete.
2. Integration
- System Access
All access to the Learning Management System was to be handled by the current internal system, allowing for transparent access to the training environment without any additional security layers. - Internal System Reporting
Extracts of data from the LMS were made available to dashboards and reports currently in use on the internal systems.
3. System Management
- System Updates
We planned for all system updates to be periodically sent to the clients’ IT Department and to be installed on their internal systems. This enabled the client to maintain internal control of the system and avoid high maintenance costs. - User Management
All learner and administrator access and privileges for the LMS is currently managed by the clients’ internal systems resulting in lower IT Administration time and cost.
4. Branding and Style
The LMS was skinned in accordance with the clients’ requirements and is now visually integrated into the clients’ internal system, making for a transparent extension to the other services on offer to employees.
The Learning Management System (LMS) is now live and was delivered on budget, on time. It is currently enabling the client to provide the required training programs to 2000+ employees in a cost-effective manner, while maintaining industry-and-legal-standard training requirements.
